Detox Bath: What it is and Why I do it

October 1, 2019

Self-care is a big buzzword out there these days, and I’ve been giving it a lot of thought. Although I think a lot of people use self-care to serve their selfish agendas, I do also believe that taking care of our selves well does have a place. If we are always completely exhausted and run down, how can we take care of others if we’re barely hanging on by a thread? Depending on what season of life you’re in, you need to find something that allows you to relax on a somewhat consistent basis. Since I’m in a season of “married but no children,” I have a lot of extra time on my hands in the evenings, so I’ve started a routine of taking a detox bath every night. It’s cheap, allows me to relax, and puts to me to sleep like a baby.

Benefits of a detox bath:

Makes you sweat and therefore, releases stored toxins from your body

The Epsom salt increases magnesium in the body which helps to ease aches and pains

Eases headaches and migraines

Improved mood

Reduces stress

Improves your quality of sleep

How to make a detox bath:

Add ½ cup Epsom salt and 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar (excellent for calming the skin) and 10 drops of your favorite essential oils (I use a calming blend from Whole Foods, but you can use whatever your favorite scent is…there’s no right/wrong here) to a warm bath. Make the bath as warm as you can without it being hot. Soak in the tub until you start to sweat usually between 15-20 mins. Be sure you get out of the tub slowly since you’re blood pressure is raised white sitting in the bath and some people can feel lightheaded once they stand. I highly encourage you to do these baths near bedtime since they always make me suuuuper sleepy and put me into a deep sleep quickly thereafter!
